It was a day of ministerial visit, when the Education Minister of Singapore, Heng Swee Keat visited Bishan East on Mother’s Day. Expressing his views about the area, he said that the vibes of community spirit and cohesion is present here, which is an essential part for laying the foundation of a better society. He also added that if Singapore strives hard to find its own relevance and position, looking out to the world, with help of better planning and strategies, the way to achievement of several challenges and opportunities will become easier. And, it is a must for the overall development of Singaporeans!
According to him, technology is another big challenge for education in Singapore. It is now essential to provide students with technical skills for a better future. Mr Heng mentioned the importance of the SkillsFuture initiative at his session, which lasted for about one hour and was attended by 160 people approximately.
In the event, a number of parents and students voiced their questions and problems about education in Singapore. From the decreasing spirit of learning among the students to the parent’s role in children’s learning, it comprised of every aspect. Mr Heng advised that there is a need to think long term and that the parents need to think over what will be beneficial for their child in future. Learning is a continuous process and one can learn at every stage. He also added that it is our responsibility to make children understand that there is a lot to learn from the world around, for a better future. Mr Heng also asked every Singaporean to step forward to build a better community.
Giving a special tribute to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, he said that leadership at every level is necessary for complete success and that this is something he learnt from Mr. Lee. Another face during the visit to Bishan East was that of Toa Payoh GRC Wong Kan Seng, the MP for Bishan and Mr. Chong Kee Hiong, the chief executive of OUE Hospitality REIT Management.
Paying homage to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, Mr. Wong said that it is a pride for Singapore to have leaders like Mr. Lee and his entire team, as it was their hard work and efforts to take Singapore forward. He also insisted on the fact that there is dire need for people who wish to serve their country and have a different passion for Singapore. According to him, this is the only way to stay ahead of the world and set an example for other education systems in the world.
At this event, the Education Minister launched a new initiative, which allows trading of the old books or reading material i exchange for something new for the residents of Bishan.
