Singapore is a country where private tuition is a billion-dollar industry. Here, three sufferers decided to offer homework help for free. Check out how?
Mr. Chia Luck Yong, 28, Mr. Anders Tan, 31 and Mr. Shaun Tan, 27, were third-year students at SMU, when they decided to introduce an app to help the students.
They developed an app, named Edusnap that allows students to upload questions onto a platform. The teachers, tutors and tuition centers, then get on that platform to guide the students.
App creator Anders Tan says he can sympathize with students who need help because of his own experience. He says: “It was knowing how painful it can be to have no one to turn to for help. I experienced the helplessness and the hurt of loved ones because they wanted to help but could not, and that drove me to create this app. I want to try my best (to help) so no one else will ever have to face a similar situation.”
The app was launched last year has now reached to 7,000 users, approximately half of them are parents, and the other half is Primary to secondary students.
STARTING THE COMPANY
The trio integrated their company Edusnap in the year 2013 and applied for a grant with Spring Singapore and is registered as a social enterprise.
Mr. Chia says: “We were funded by Spring Singapore. We did not really need that much funding, but it was just that we were passionate.” After a lot of struggle and several rejections, their idea was finally accepted.
The trio also runs a separate paid platform so schools and voluntary welfare organizations can have a virtual classroom that is exclusive to the school or organization. The institutions bear the cost rather than charging from the users, and that is where Edusnap receives its income.
“We would never equate money to knowledge. We have no intention to charge,” adds Mr. Chia with conviction.
“We really felt good when we saw e-mails and letters that said, ‘Thank you so much for creating such a platform’ and that they really needed it.” The overwhelming response of the Singaporeans proves the significance of this great helping App.
